Since 2011, Sleshi Tadesse and Fikera Guangul, a husband-and-wife/mom-and-pop duo, have taken pride in running Mahider Ethiopian Restaurant, the first Ethiopian restaurant in Utah. Sleshi arrived from Ethiopia to the US and settled in Utah in 1997, while Fikera joined him a few years later in 2002. In 2008, they began operating a small African market to create a sense of home for Utah's African community. Among the traditional fabrics, handicrafts, and spices sold, one item that customers couldn't get enough of was the Injera, a staple of authentic Ethiopian cuisine. Due to popular demand, Sleshi and Fikera took a leap of faith, transforming the tiny market into a full-service restaurant in Salt Lake City. They developed a comprehensive menu featuring recipes passed down from their families, which they proudly serve to this day.
At Mahider Ethiopian Restaurant, we take pride in offering authentic Ethiopian cuisine that is truly a labor of love. While our dishes may be time-consuming to prepare, our commitment to quality remains unwavering—we never cut corners. Our wots (Amharic for stew) are made from scratch and take several hours to create, but we start early each morning to ensure they are fresh and ready by the time you sit down at our Salt Lake City restaurant. We source our beef locally, make our Ayib (Ethiopian cheese) in-house, and, most importantly, prepare our Injera from scratch every morning as well.
